How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost in 2026?
Park fees, daily budgets, private versus shared trips and the costs people forget, with a worked example for a Maasai Mara safari from Nairobi.
How much Kenya safari tours cost in 2026 comes down to three things: which parks you visit and when, the type of vehicle and accommodation you choose, and how many people share the trip. Park entry fees alone can run from USD 80 to USD 200 per adult per day, and that part of the price is the same no matter which operator you book with.
This guide breaks the cost into its real parts so you can compare quotes properly and decide where to spend and where to save.
The short answer: daily cost per person
Most Kenya safaris are priced per person, per day, and include the vehicle, driver-guide, fuel, park fees, accommodation and meals. International flights are never included. Across Nairobi operators in 2026, prices typically fall into three bands:
| Style | What you get | Typical cost per person per day |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Shared safari van or Land Cruiser, simple tented camps or budget lodges, often just outside the park gates | USD 180–300 |
| Mid-range | Private or small-group vehicle, comfortable lodges or permanent tented camps | USD 300–550 |
| Upmarket and fly-in | Private vehicle or light-aircraft flights, conservancy camps, smaller lodges | USD 600+ |
These are planning ranges, not quotes. The biggest single swing factor is the Maasai Mara's seasonal entry fee, covered below.
Park fees: the part nobody can discount
Every operator pays the same gate fees, so a quote that looks far cheaper than others has usually left fees out or assumed a cheaper residency category. These are the current non-resident adult rates for the parks most first-time visitors include:
| Park | Managed by | Non-resident adult fee (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Maasai Mara National Reserve | Narok County Government | USD 100 per day (January–June), USD 200 per day (July–December) |
| Amboseli National Park | Kenya Wildlife Service | USD 90 per day |
| Lake Nakuru National Park | Kenya Wildlife Service | USD 90 per day |
| Nairobi National Park | Kenya Wildlife Service | USD 80 per day |
A few details matter when you budget:
- Maasai Mara tickets last 12 hours, not 24. If your camp is outside the reserve and you drive in on three separate days, you pay three times.
- Children pay less. In the Mara, non-resident children aged 9–17 pay a flat USD 50, and younger children enter free.
- Private conservancies charge their own fees. Camps in conservancies bordering the Mara add a conservancy fee that is usually folded into the nightly rate.
- Residents and citizens pay different rates. East African residents and Kenyan citizens have lower categories, and KWS parks also have a separate rate for African citizens. Make sure your quote uses the category that matches your passport or residence permit.
Fees are set by the county government and KWS and can change with little notice, so check the figure again when you confirm your dates.
Why the Maasai Mara costs more from July
The Mara's entry fee doubles on 1 July, which is roughly when the Great Migration herds arrive from Tanzania. One adult entering the reserve on three separate days in August pays USD 600 in reserve fees before any accommodation or transport. In March, the same three entries cost USD 300.
That doesn't mean you should avoid the Mara in peak season. The river crossings are one of the great wildlife spectacles on earth, and our Great Migration guide explains where the herds are each month. It does mean that if you are flexible, a January to June trip gives you the Mara's resident lions, cheetahs and elephants for half the gate cost.
What drives the rest of the price
Private or shared vehicle
A private safari in Kenya from Nairobi gives you your own vehicle and guide, so you decide when to leave, how long to stay with a leopard and when to head back. The vehicle cost is split between fewer people, which is why a private trip for two costs more per person than the same route in a shared vehicle. For a family or group of four to six, a private vehicle often costs little more per person than joining a shared departure.
Accommodation
Budget camps just outside the Mara gates can cost a fraction of a lodge inside the reserve or a conservancy camp. Staying inside or close to the action saves driving time each day, which matters more on short trips.
Season
High season runs roughly from July to October and over Christmas and New Year. April and May bring the long rains: fewer visitors, lower lodge rates, greener landscapes and some muddy roads. The weeks either side of the rains are good value.
Road or fly-in
Driving from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara takes around five to six hours. A scheduled light-aircraft flight takes under an hour from Wilson Airport but adds noticeably to the price. Flying makes the most sense on longer trips with several far-apart parks, where it saves whole days on the road.
Worked example: a 3-day Maasai Mara safari from Nairobi
Our 3-day Maasai Mara safari from Nairobi is priced per person and includes park fees, full-board accommodation, game drives and the 4x4. On any 3-day Mara trip, gate fees make up a large share of the total, so the season you choose changes the price more than on a longer safari.
When you compare a 3-day Mara quote from any operator, check these lines:
- Are Maasai Mara entry fees included, for how many entries, and at the January–June or July–December rate?
- Is the vehicle private or shared, and does it have a pop-up roof for viewing and photography?
- Where exactly is the camp or lodge, inside the reserve, in a conservancy, or outside the gates?
- Which meals, drinking water and airport or hotel transfers are included?
If any answer is vague, ask for it in writing before you pay a deposit.
Costs that are easy to forget
- Kenya eTA. Every visitor, including babies and children, needs an approved Electronic Travel Authorization before flying. The standard fee is about USD 30 per person. Apply only through the official government portal.
- Tips. Tipping your driver-guide and camp staff is customary and appreciated, though always your choice. Many travellers set aside a daily amount for the guide, shared across the group.
- Optional activities. Hot-air balloon flights over the Mara, guided walks and Maasai village visits are usually extras. Ask for the current price when you book.
- Drinks, laundry and travel insurance. Small on their own, but they add up over a week.
How to keep a Kenya safari affordable
- Travel between January and June if the Great Migration isn't your priority. The Mara's entry fee is half the peak rate.
- Mix the Mara with parks that cost less. Amboseli and Lake Nakuru have lower daily fees and very different scenery, from Kilimanjaro views to flamingo-lined shores.
- Share a vehicle, either on a group departure or by travelling with friends or family.
- Stay longer in fewer places. Every transfer day costs fuel and time without much game viewing.
- Book the Mara early for July to October. The best-value camps fill first.
